Human rights and race relations at CEIU

Mofizul Islam is National Vice-President, Human Rights. Born in May, Mofizul says he was naturally drawn to the labour movement and celebrates May Day along with his birthday.

“Low wages or close to no wages for labourers in many countries of the world makes me feel that the world is not fulfilling its responsibilities to all human beings and also not addressing injustices to the environment,” he said.

This sense of injustice led Mofizul to get involved in politics during high school, but he then distanced himself from activism. It was only when he felt that he and his colleagues were being treated unfairly as federal government employees that he decided to get involved in the Canada Employment and Immigration Union.

“I have a strong desire to protect our workplaces and communities from human rights violations, microaggressions, harassment, discrimination, phobias, and various types of abuse,” he said.

Mofizul now chairs the Human Rights and Race Relations Committee at CEIU, with a mandate to represent and respond to concerns relating to human rights issues.

“I would like to build a generation of activists who promote safe spaces for stakeholders and take ownership of their own wellbeing,” he said of his work.
