In 1833, the British Parliament passed a law abolishing slavery in all British North American colonies, including Canada. The law came into effect on August 1, 1834. It was through the resistance of Africans, both enslaved and free, and others opposed to slavery based on ideas of equality, that the abolition of enslavement was finally achieved.
