International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day of action. Its roots trace back to women workers who marched for better wages, safer conditions and the right to be heard. The 1912 Bread and Roses strike, led by immigrant women textile workers, demanded not only fair pay (“bread”) but also dignity and respect (“roses”). These women knew that real change happens when we stand together and history has proven them right.
Here in Canada, women in the Labour Movement have fought for and won the rights many of us rely on today. Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) have been part of this legacy, securing many gains for our members.
None of our victories happened by chance. They were won because workers, especially women, organized, mobilized and used their collective power. And that power extends beyond the workplace. Our voices matter and so does our vote. Engaging in the democratic process is one of the ways we can influence the policies that shape our working lives and our communities.
This International Women’s Day, we honor the women who marched before us by continuing their fight. Your voice is your vote. It’s time to use it!
